Sobaman!

soboman

It seems there is no shortage of people wanting Obama to save the world. Now the National Organization for Women wants him to fix all their ills. It seems everyone today is looking to the president to fix every single problem on the planet.

NOW's issue is with Obama's cabinet which is comprised of 20 people, 5 of which are women. Of course, women comprise more than 25% in the general population, which is the concern of NOW. However, what NOW is not looking at is that Obama's cabinet in almost every regard has a representative higher percentage of minority persons and women than in most higher political offices: five women (25%), four African-Americans (20%), three Latinos (15%), and two Asians (10%). Contrast that with 16% represented for women in the house and senate and in gubernatorial offices.

Don't get me wrong; I think the goal of women having equal representation in the work force is not only a admirable, but necessary, but since when is it the president's job to implement all our hopes and dreams? When did we give up on personal responsibility? When did we forget the timeless words of John F. Kennedy: "... ask not what your country can do for you — ask what you can do for your country."

Obama is not perfect, but in this regard he has already gone beyond the norm by including higher than the average in all regards (except for white males, of course). When does it become our responsibility or the responsibility of these other groups, such as the National Organization of Women to get more women into politics?
