Paygo makes sense

coins

Obama wants to bring back Pay-As-You-Go to the federal government. It makes sense; if you budget and then need to change the budget, you have to remove something of equal value to what you put in. It's called budgeting.

I guess the fact that it makes sense is what stymies congress. Some critics, including Republican Whip Eric Cantor, are saying that Obama doesn't measure up because of his spending so we shouldn't do it:
"It seems a tad disingenuous for the President and Speaker [Nancy] Pelosi to talk about PAYGO rules after ramming trillions in spending through Congress proposing policies that create more debt in the first six months of this year than in the previous 220 years combined"

Brilliant. Don't discuss the merits of the idea - shoot the messenger. I'm no fan of the spending this year either, but that doesn't make common sense any less sensible (although it's quite uncommon).

If you can't pay for it, don't do it. It's not that difficult.
