Sanford and compassion

I had agree with Peter Bregman in his article on Sanford: he shouldn't have done it, but sometimes things happen that are hard to control. We should have compassion.

Even in his e-mails, Sanford seem respectful as he was dealing with emotions he didn't feel he could contain in his "hopelessly impossible situation of love". To some degree I think it's hard to understand what people are thinking and feeling until you are in their shoes. Jon Stewart's closing line on this is pretty much on the money.

It seems that Republicans are just letting everything slip through their fingers. Besides being driven by Rush, who is becoming more and more out of touch with the general population, their mantra of personal responsibility seems to have gone by the way side, only to be taken up by Obama.

When he went to Europe he said that the U.S. was at fault for some of the disconnect between us, but the EU had work to do too. He said the same thing in the Middle East. And now, with health care, he's saying it again: eat better, exercise. You'd think he read my blog.

So, Republicans, are you going to fix things and have a platform or just spend your time agreeing with Rush's gripes?

Bozemen, montana doesn't understand privacy

bozeman montana

Here's a city for which you don't want to work: Bozeman, Montana. Evidently the policy makers make you give up user names and passwords to social networking sites in order to be employed by the city.
How would you like to apply for a job and have your prospective employer ask for the usernames and passwords for all your social-networking accounts?

That’s what’s happened to applicants for jobs with the city of Bozeman, Montana, who were surprised to discover they needed more than a work history and references.

“Please list any and all, current personal or business websites, web pages or memberships on any Internet-based chat rooms, social clubs or forums, to include, but not limited to: Facebook, Google, Yahoo, YouTube.com, MySpace, etc.,” reads a background-check waiver form that applicants had to sign. (There’s no mention of Twitter.) The form then contains three lines where applicants are to list their logins and passwords.

Having a background in IT, giving passwords would require waterboarding and even then I would be hard pressed to give them up. But forget the right to privacy and the huge personal security breech: it's just plain stupid. The city is setting themselves up for a lawsuit the likes of which they've never seen. Imagine if someone applied for a job and a few days later they found someone had posted things in their name, or contacted friends and family, or posed as them.

If illegal and immoral isn't enough, it's just plain dumb. It's the kind of thing that makes you wonder if the city government likes to play with gasoline and matches.

James von brunn not just a nut job?

James von Brunn's shooting was an isolated incident. This isn't about some nut job being feed ideas from some ideologue. In the end we all are responsible for our own actions.

But, in initially defending himself, Rush just goes too far. Instead of just saying "hey, this is just a nut job", to silence those who blame him, he decides to blame the left. I remember him being up in arms about the movie Falling Down in which a right-wing nut job goes crazy and starts shooting. He's also found a way to take the farthest right group, the Nazis, and make them leftists.

Look, there are nuts on both sides: extremists on both sides. Once someone makes all the bad guys part of the other side that is the time red flags should be going up and little alarm bells should ring that say "this guy is not about truth but about spin."

Maybe he's deluded himself. I don't know. What I do know is that people (even the 25% on both sides that hold steadfastly to their side no matter what) should think and not just believe what one well spoken man says. Perhaps we can take some lessons from the Martians:

Mo money, mo problems

obama's portrait

Okay, it's an old 80's movie reference, but isn't it true? It seems people are not feeling the love as much as they used to with Obama. Polls, although favorable, are slipping and people are particularly unhappy with the spending, and the debt.
But 58 percent of respondents said Obama and Congress should focus on keeping the budget deficit down, even if takes longer for the economy to recover. The Congressional Budget Office estimates the federal deficit could top $1.8 trillion this fiscal year -- by far a record.

As much as the Republicans want to blame this on Obama, it's not his fault, although it's time for him to take ownership of it and turn the spending around before Pac Man takes over:

Paygo makes sense

coins

Obama wants to bring back Pay-As-You-Go to the federal government. It makes sense; if you budget and then need to change the budget, you have to remove something of equal value to what you put in. It's called budgeting.

I guess the fact that it makes sense is what stymies congress. Some critics, including Republican Whip Eric Cantor, are saying that Obama doesn't measure up because of his spending so we shouldn't do it:
"It seems a tad disingenuous for the President and Speaker [Nancy] Pelosi to talk about PAYGO rules after ramming trillions in spending through Congress proposing policies that create more debt in the first six months of this year than in the previous 220 years combined"

Brilliant. Don't discuss the merits of the idea - shoot the messenger. I'm no fan of the spending this year either, but that doesn't make common sense any less sensible (although it's quite uncommon).

If you can't pay for it, don't do it. It's not that difficult.

Stephen Colbert often goes off on how big his dangling participles are. Well, he may just be right. Besides putting together some great entertainment for the troops in Iraq recently, he decided to take on Don't Ask Don't Tell in front of the large military crowd. We all knew they were large after the now famous Correspondents Dinner, but I'm thinking we may be able to see these suckers from space.

At least he must have. Of course he could just be spouting out nonsense like Cheney who doesn't care when facts and what he's saying collide. Someone needs to explain a little something to Mr. Nelson about what government handouts are.

Cheney: it's dick's fault

Dick Cheney has backed off his position that there was a link between 911 and Iraq (finally), but now he's blaming Richard Clark for the 911 attacks. Nevermind that Richard Clark was the one that wrote the famous "Bin Laden Determined to Strike" memo, and on September 4th 2001, exactly one week before the attacks, sent another memo warning of an attack that would leave hundreds dead.

Wow! There are two Dicks in this story but one in name only.

60% of bankrupcies involve medical bills

pills

According to a report in the American Journal of Medicine, medical bills are behind 60 percent of bankruptcies. Of those groups, three quarters had health insurance.

Now some will try to use this as political fodder for their agenda, but there are several factors at play here:
  • America is the most obese country - over 30% by some measures which is a full 6 percentage points above the second place contestant: Mexico.

  • Given our obesity, it is not a stretch to say many live unhealthy lives leading to medical conditions that are easily prevented. Preventable diseases kill far more people than other causes.

  • Bankruptcy is not a completely accurate measure of inability to pay. Although there are times bankruptcy makes since, it can't be used as a measure of fiscal soundness since causes and situations are uncertain. It does, however, show reason for concern.

  • As Americans we demand the best care, and hospitals are leery of not covering every little aspect of medical care, no matter how insignificant for fear of a lawsuit. This in addition to other factors makes our health care more expensive than any other country and yet we rank 37th for health care.

Overall, I think there are families that are legitimately hurting out there, but I don't think this is true of the entire sixty percent or possibly even half. We live an extravagant lifestyle where we buy when we want to buy and eat what we want to eat and expect our doctors to fix it all so we can spend a few more years in front of the TV.

Is the health care system in need of some changes? Absolutely. But we can't just expect that paying less or having someone else paying for it is going to fix it. We are going to have to work on prevention by exercising and eating right. We are going to have to spend our money wisely, save up and have an emergency fund for... well, emergencies! Have we not learned about just spending money with wild abandon from this recent financial crisis? The poorest 25% of the US has gone from overspending their income by 12 percent in 1960 to overspending by 95 percent in 2004.

There are legitimately people out there who either didn't have the income despite the expense, had too great an expense, or had a non-preventable medical condition. For those people I am truly sorry and I hope that we can modify our health care system appropriately to accommodate them. For those that fall outside those categories, I am sorry for them also, but change in our private and public systems must be accompanied by responsibility within ourselves. We can do more good by fixing ourselves then by fixing systems that revolve around our ability to do so. Instead, let's let those systems fix the things we can't.

Newt apologizes about 'racist' label

newt gingrich

It was just a week ago when former Speaker Newt Gingrich and Rush Limbaugh called Obama's Justice pick Judge Sonia Sotomayor a racist. Now Newt is withdrawing the comment, as he should.

Look, I understand his position, but, besides it being incorrect, going to the extreme of calling her a racist is just... well, extreme. Let's have a dialogue about the dialogue, not turn it into something it's not.

Beside, siding with Rush on racism, is like siding with Charles Manson on sanity: you kind of wonder if he's really this extreme or it's just the drugs.

(On a side note, Newt was recently on the Daily Show promoting his book. I don't always agree with the guy, but I appreciate what he brings to the dialogue. I would imagine he has some good things to say in this book.)
